5 Annual Report | 2023-2024 Reflecting on another remarkable year at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, we remain inspired by the visionary leadership of St. John Baptist de La Salle, the patron saint of educators and founder of the Christian Brothers. His pioneering commitment to accessible, high-quality education lives on at SJCI, where we embrace innovation and continually seek new ways to engage, inspire and transform our students. Beyond the classroom, we are proud to share that The Buffalo News named SJCI the Best Private High School in Western New York—a testament to the exceptional academics, athletics, fine arts and extracurricular programs we offer to enrich the student experience: • Our student-athletes demonstrated the width and depth of our athletic excellence by winning the Monsignor Martin Supremacy Cup. • Our talented performers brought home six prestigious Shea’s High School Musical Theatre Awards, including Best Musical, affirming the virtuosity of our fine arts program. • Four out of five of our students participate in the over 50 clubs and activities offered, enriching their school experience and developing lifelong skills. None of these accomplishments would be possible without the unwavering support of our loyal alumni, benefactors and friends. The cost of providing our second-to-none education now approaches $17,000 per year, yet it is St. John Baptist de La Salle...Pray for Us! Live Jesus in our Hearts...Forever! 6 Annual Report | 2023-2024 THE STRENGTH OF OUR BALANCE SHEET FINANCIAL REPORT Scholarship Endowment Fund SJCI Endowment Board Designated Fund 6/30/15 6/30/16 6/30/17 6/30/18 6/30/19 6/30/20 6/30/21 6/30/22 6/30/23 6/30/24 The Scholarship Endowment Fund (SEF) is a collection of over 200 funds that provide a permanent source of student financial aid and programmatic support to the school. While a majority of the SEF’s endowed funds ensure that SJCI remains financially accessible to deserving students, several other funds make certain that signature programs, facilities, and extracurriculars (retreats, sports, clubs) continue to provide students with the most transformative and holistic education possible. Gifts to endowed funds are invested to earn long-term returns and grow over time. A portion of the SEF is withdrawn each year to benefit our current students. As of June 30, 2024, the SJCI Scholarship Endowment Fund was valued at $29,625,977. This reflects a 12.61% increase from the previous fiscal year. Employing a 4.5% spend over a rolling 20-quarter average, the SEF, in combination with The St. Joe’s Fund, funding from Lasallian and other gifts, provides over $3,500,000 annually for financial aid and scholarships. After receipt of $1,111,855 in gifts, the endowment value increased to $29,625,977 as of June 30, 2024. The SJCI SEF provides crucial support to the school. It has managed to provide a steady stream of income for financial aid and scholarships while preserving purchasing power for future generations. To meet this goal, the endowment invests with a long time horizon, and the school balances current spending needs with support for its long-term priorities. The endowment is structured to support the school in perpetuity by pursuing an investment strategy designed to achieve its goals through the careful consideration of risk and return across asset classes, including public securities, marketable alternatives and real assets, and through the astute selection of external investment managers. This investment strategy has produced excellent long-term results. Over the seven years ending June 30, 2024, SJCI SEF has returned 6.8% per annum, which is directly in line with the benchmark target prescribed in our endowment investment policy statement. James P.
